Geographical variation in the carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus content of blue mussels, Mytilus edulis

چکیده

Shellfish farming contributes to nutrient removal in coastal and estuarine systems, as bivalves incorporate nutrients into their tissues shells, which is removed from the marine system on harvest. Fourteen locations around UK were surveyed explore geographic variation carbon, nitrogen phosphorus content of tissue shell blue mussels. Phosphorus had a significant negative relationship with mean annual seawater temperature for both rope bottom cultured sites. Per tonne live mussel, culture significantly more (8.50 ± 0.59 kg) (0.95 0.07 than (5.00 0.013 kg 0.43 0.01 phosphorus). Bottom culture, however, provides C (60.15 0.77 (46.12 1.69 kg). Further studies are required examine effect growth rate, remediation, carbon stored shell, mussel aquaculture.

Growth of mussels (Mytilus edulis

Mussel seed, obtained from the intertidal zone and permanently immersed collector ropes, was cultivated on ropes suspended from three rafts located at three different sites within the Ria de Arousa (Galicia, NW Spain). Sites were characterized by different levels of phytoplankton availability. The source of seed stock had a marked influence upon subsequent mussel growth; seed originating from c...

The exhalant jet of mussels Mytilus edulis

The exhalant jet flow of mussels in conjunction with currents and/or other mussels may strongly influence the mussels’ grazing impact. Literature values of mussel exhalant jet velocity vary considerably and the detailed fluid mechanics of the near-mussel flow generated by the exhalant jet has hitherto been uncertain. Computational modelling of this phenomenon depends on knowledge of the velocit...

Seasonal variation in the relative utilization of carbon and nitrogen by the mussel Mytilus edulis:

Elemental balances for carbon and nitrogen in an open-shore population of the bivalve mollusc Mytilus edulis underwent seasonal changes more characteristic of time-averaged than immediate optimization, Budgets emphasized the significance of shell and byssus towards both the carbon (8 and 44 %, respectively) and nitrogen (8 and 21 %, respectively) within total production, and indicated that betw...

Identification of polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins in blue mussels (Mytilus edulis) from the Baltic Sea.

Polybrominated dibenzo-p-dioxins (PBDDs) are known to be formed as byproducts in connection with the manufacture and combustion of products containing brominated flame retardants. However, to date little is known about the occurrence of PBDDs in biological samples. The aim of the present investigation was to examine the presence of PBDDs in blue mussels (Mytilus edulis) from the Baltic Sea empl...
